Gongyi’s emergency management bureau said in a statement that parts of the rocket stage shattered in a “safe area” but caused a fire in the crash area. The bureau says the fire has been extinguished and no one was harmed.
The two-stage Tianlong-3 (‘Sky Dragon 3’) rocket is a partially reusable rocket being developed by a private company. According to NDTV, rocket debris falling into China after launch is not new, but it is very rare for a part of a rocket under development to fly away from its launch site.
The company says that the first stage of Tianlong-3 was normal during its hot test, but later due to structural failure it separated from the launch pad and fell in a hilly area one and a half kilometers away from there. Tianlong-3 is being compared to SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket.
