Famous writers of the film industry, Rajiv Kaul and Raj Shandilya talked about the process, challenges and budget of script writing.
Can a film be imagined without any story? The answer will be no. After all, the audience likes or dislikes the film on the basis of the story. The initial work of giving the shape of a story to a film is done by screenplay writers.
The screenplay of a film is usually between 90 to 120 pages. It may take writers about 3 months or more to write it. However, despite so much creative work, the fees of writers are less as compared to actors and directors.
In this week’s Reel to Real, we talk about the differences between script and screenplay writing, their processes, challenges and budgets. For this we talked to writers Raj Shandilya and Rajeev Kaul. Both of them also revealed some interesting stories related to the actors.
He told that once Sanjay Dutt started crying after listening to the screenplay of the film. At the behest of Salman Khan, a change was made in his character in the film Ready.
A screenplay is needed to tell a story. To make a film a story is needed. In the beginning an idea is considered whether a film can be made on it or not. This idea can be of 2 words or 2 pages. The entire story is built on this idea. To tell this story we need a screenplay. Meaning that the larger form of the story is the screenplay, which is seen on the big screen.
The screenplay of the film is between 90 and 120 pages. Usually the screenplay of a film is 90 to 120 pages. This is because usually the runtime of a film is between one and a half hours to two hours. One page in a screenplay usually equals one minute of screen time.
What is bounded script? A bound script means you have everything ready. Which includes story, screenplay and dialogues. With this the actor understands everything easily. It does not need any separate narration.
Emotion is necessary for comedy Raj Shandilya told that writing a screenplay of comedy genre requires a lot of emotion. He also said that only middle class children are able to do good comedy because they have a lot of emotions. Those people have suffered a lot in their life, due to which they are able to convert sorrow into humor.
Raj Shandilya is Kapil Sharma’s first writer Raj has worked with Kapil Sharma in the show Comedy Circus. He said, ‘I had written a script for Kapil ji in the beginning itself that when he becomes a part of this show, I will definitely narrate it to him. I also messaged him.
Later, when he came to this show, he remembered my message. He asked himself to tell the story. He liked the story very much. Then after this I started writing for them.
Comedian Sudesh Lahiri cannot read the script, he has to be reminded. Raj has also worked with comedian Sudesh Lahiri. Narrating an interesting anecdote of Sudesh, he said, ‘Sudesh cannot read the script, whether it is in Hindi or Punjabi. They have to recite the entire script and memorize it. Once I wrote his script and went out for a shoot. Then I had to memorize the entire script for 3 hours on the phone.
Sanjay Dutt started crying after listening to the story of the film Raj has also written the story of Sanjay Dutt’s film Bhoomi. He told, ‘For the first time I had written a film on a serious issue. When I narrated the screenplay to Sanjay Baba (Sanjay Dutt), he started crying. He even hugged me.
During the shooting of this film, I remained in touch with Baba for 4-5 months. Sanjay Dutt’s image is very different in the society, but in reality he is very innocent. He also told me about his experience of going to jail, his relationship with his father and many stories from film sets. He always keeps asking about my and my family’s well-being.
Many times writers’ payments get stuck Rajiv Kaul told that a script writer has to face many problems. The biggest problem is getting less fees and not getting fees on time. Big production houses hire writers at huge fees. Whereas the pay scale of small production houses is less.
Many times it happens that new writers work for free with the production house just to get credit in the film. So that their future is golden.
However, sometimes it also happens that writers do not get their fees on time. It has happened with Rajeev himself that his payment got stuck. However, he did not reveal the name of that film and director-producer. Because this makes it difficult to meet at work.
He further said, ‘If the film is a hit, the credit goes to the actor and director. It is said that the director’s vision was very good. He got the best work out of the actors. But when the film flops, the entire blame is put on the writer. It is said that the writer had not written the story well. It is really sad to see this.
Govinda understands things quickly Rajeev has worked with Govinda in 10-12 films including Shola Aur Shabnam, Dulhe Raja. Praising Govinda, Rajeev said, ‘He is such an artiste, who easily catches everything written in the screenplay.’
His character changed on Salman’s suggestion Rajeev told that many actors also give suggestions after reading the script. Many times Rajiv also accepts their suggestions. He told that Salman Khan had given him a suggestion during the film Ready. Regarding this he says, ‘I wanted Salman’s look to be a bit like a family man. Then Salman himself told me to make my character a little funny.
I found his suggestion correct and molded his character in the same way. The film also got positive response from fans.
Sometimes there is a ruckus over the screenplay Rajeev told that many times the writer, actor and director argue over the screenplay. Many times he himself has fought with director Anees Bazmee.
Rajiv told that in some cases the matter even reaches the level of abuse. However, he says that everyone wants to make the film the best. For this reason, some differences of opinion are inevitable.
