According to the 2019 report of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), ovarian cancer is the third most common cancer among women in India. Every year, around 1.75 lakh women die of ovarian cancer across the world. According to the report of the World Health Organization (WHO), in the year 2018, 184,799 women died of ovarian cancer across the world.

Bollywood actress Manisha Koirala has also struggled with this disease. Recently, she talked about this in an interview.

Manisha Koirala said, “Somewhere in my life, something is incomplete. As you grow up, you accept your reality. There are many dreams about which you realize that they will not be fulfilled and you compromise with it. Motherhood is one of them. It was difficult for me to have ovarian cancer and not be able to become a mother, but I accepted it.”

Not just Manisha, many women in the country are fighting this disease. Many women do not even know that they have this disease because its symptoms are detected very late.

According to the American Cancer Society, so far in the year 2024, approximately 19,680 new cases of ovarian cancer have been reported in the United States alone.

According to ICMR, the incidence of ovarian cancer in India is around 6.8 per 1,00,000 women. The risk increases with age. It increases from the age of 35 years and peaks between the ages of 55-64 years.

Ovarian cancer is difficult to detect. A woman’s ability to conceive after ovarian cancer depends on the stage of her cancer.

Stage and type of ovarian cancer

  • Epithelial Ovarian Cancer- This is the most common type of cancer. It often occurs in women aged 20 to 25 years.
  • Primary Peritoneal Cancer- This is a rare cancer of the peritoneum. Its survival rate is 11-17 months.
  • Fallopian Tube Cancer- This cancer is rare, its chance of occurring is only 1%.
  • Borderline Ovarian Tumours – In this, abnormal cells form in the tissues covering the ovaries. This is usually cured with surgery.

Symptoms of Ovarian Cancer

Most women ignore the symptoms of ovarian cancer. That is why ovarian cancer is detected in the late stage, whereas uterine cancer is detected in most women in the first stage itself. It can be detected through ultrasound, MRI and CT scan.
