Shahid Kapoor recently remembered his middle class days. He told that despite being the son of Pankaj Kapoor and Neelima Azim, he still feels like an outsider in the film industry. Recalling his childhood days, the actor said that his parents got divorced when he was three years old. After the separation of his parents, he started living with his mother, who raised him alone. Shahid said that he also has good relations with his father. But he never took any help or advice from his father to move ahead in the industry.

Shahid Kapoor shared an anecdote related to his childhood during a conversation with Faye D’Souza. He said, ‘I knew my father and we had a good relationship, but I was with my mother since I was three years old. I remember when Ishaan was born, I was 14 years old, and my mother had given up acting because she had to take care of Ishaan. She was 35-36 years old when Ishaan was born, and having a child at that age is not easy. Being a working woman with a 14-year-old son, living in Mumbai, and second marriage, all this was very difficult for her. After Ishaan grew up a little, she wanted to do acting again but it was not that easy because people forget you. Mother was trying to manage everything herself, and at that time we were living in rented houses.

‘Never took any advice from father’

Shahid further said, ‘I had a good relationship with my father but I did not want to take any advice from him. He was always available to advise and guide me, but I wanted to do everything on my own and I was very proud of that.

I am a bit unique – Shahid

During this time, Shahid Kapoor described himself as a unique example. He said, I have always considered myself an outsider. Still, I don’t feel that I am completely ready for the industry. I am a bit of a unique specimen… As an outsider, the first thing I want is acceptance, and I come from a middle class family, so I had no contact with fashion, or makeup artists, producers, directors. I didn’t know anything. I just entered the industry and my first film did quite well.
