Veteran actress Mumtaz has talked about her relationship with Shammi Kapoor in a recent interview. Mumtaz also told why she rejected Shammi Kapoor’s marriage proposal at the age of 17.
Mumtaz and Shammi Kapoor worked together in the film Brahmachari. The audience loved their pairing in the film.
Mumtaz said- no one can love me more than Shammi Kapoor
In a conversation with Rediff, Mumtaz told how Shammi Kapoor proposed to her when she was just 17 years old. Mumtaz said- I was 17 years old. He wanted me to give up my career. I don’t think anyone can give me as much love as he gave me. I have never forgotten him. Even today when his name comes, tears come to my eyes.
It was not a love affair but much more than that. We loved each other very much.
Mumtaz had to choose career over love
Mumtaz told that at that time the women of Kapoor family could not work. This was the reason that she had to sacrifice her love for her career. She said- He (Shammi Kapoor) respected the wishes of his family. I had to respect my career. Apart from this I had no other option. What else could I do?
I also had the responsibility of my family. Despite being a struggler, I was being paid Rs 8 lakh. I was the highest paid actress of my time.
Shammi Kapoor also talked about his relationship with Mumtaz in an interview given to Lehren Retro. He told how their romance turned into a nightmare. He said- At that time I was a widower (whose wife has died). Mumtaz was a very beautiful little girl. For a short time we both had dreams and then it turned into a nightmare. I am happy with what I am today.
