The journey till here was no less than breaking a rock for Vinesh. She faced many difficulties. She fought against the sexual exploitation of women wrestlers. When she protested, Vinesh was dragged on the streets of Delhi. During the protest at Jantar Mantar, Vinesh could not even practice wrestling for a long time.
In 2020, Vinesh Phogat was even called a ‘fake coin’ and ‘lame horse’ after her defeat in the Tokyo Olympics. These words of the federation president broke Vinesh. Vinesh’s brother Harvinder says that Vinesh went into depression after this. When she went to the doctor to recover from depression, it was revealed that she had suffered a severe head injury during practice in 2018. Vinesh’s injury resurfaced due to taking too much tension. Many of us might be going through the same difficulties and challenges as Vinesh has gone through. Those who have failed many times in life, who have faced difficulties at every step or who have faced many other challenges.
So today’Relationship‘ We will talk about this topic in this column. Psychiatrist Dr. Satyakant Trivedi talked to Dainik Bhaskar about this and told how to deal with difficult situations when you face them.
Research shows that the feeling of failure can have a very negative impact on mental health. Repeated failure can have a negative impact on a person’s mental and emotional well-being.
The impact of failure and difficult situations varies according to age. A study by the International Journal of Novel Research and Development (IJNRD) says that atychiphobia (fear of failure) occurs in children when they experience anxiety and fear during defeat. In adults, this fear of failure can also take the form of chronic stress. Its result can be seen in the form of many negative effects.
How to learn from difficult situations and failures
When you pursue your dreams, you are just as likely to fail as you are to succeed. It is said that failure does not stop people, but the way people deal with failure stops them from moving forward. So at such a time you-
- Face difficulties boldly and learn from your mistakes.
- Understand that not every idea that comes to your mind will work. Avoid making any wrong decisions.
- Take time after a failure to organize your thoughts and figure out what you did wrong.
- When you face failure, ask yourself why it happened. Was it the result of some of your actions?
- One way to learn from your failures is to embrace change.
- One defeat is not the end of life, it is a chance to get more opportunities in the future.
- When you fail sometimes you have to change things drastically. Don’t give up if things aren’t going your way and start from the beginning every time.
- If you know the reasons why you are failing, you will be able to work better on it. This will also help you in future success.
Take help of ‘Psychological First Aid’
Failure is frustrating and can have a deep impact on the heart and mind of a person. Facing failures in our 20s and 30s can be more difficult because this is the first time we experience major failures. Not doing well in university, losing a job, losing a competition, or not being able to clear a competitive exam even after giving it several times.
In such a situation, psychiatrist Dr. Satyakant Trivedi advises that you should resort to ‘Psychological First Aid’. That is, go and talk to someone close to you. Share your pain, this will also help you get out of that difficult time.
The job of psychological first aid is to provide mental first aid. In simple words, it means to give emotional support to a person who is worried or sad. When we are sad, we need a person who can take care of us, whose words can calm our mind. No degree is required for this, anyone can give psychological first aid to any helpful person.
To the person giving psychological first aid-
- Must be a good listener.
- A person suffering from stress should be motivated.
- You should not impose any of your opinions or decisions on him.
- The victim’s words should be kept to oneself.
- They should be reassured that everything will be fine soon.
