Along with this, Abhishek has worked in 5 films to join the Rs 100 crore club in Bollywood. Apart from ‘Stree 2’, there are films like ‘Stree’, ‘Dream Girl’, ‘Bala’ and ‘Dream Girl 2’. Today, Abhishek is at that stage in Bollywood, where through his work he is inspiring the people of the world to come into this world full of glitz.

Let us know the success story of Abhishek Banerjee, in his own words.

The first play was based on Robin Hood.

I was born in Kharakpur, West Bengal. My father was in CRPF. He was transferred everywhere. I stayed there. I lived in Kolkata, Delhi and Kalpakkam in Tamil Nadu. This allowed me to learn the language and culture of every place. When I was in sixth class in Kalpakkam, my first play was on Robin Hood. When I got praise, I thought it was a very good thing. Although there was a lot of involvement in sports also. I used to play cricket and hockey, but gradually I started enjoying acting. I started feeling that this is a very interesting thing which I have to keep doing forever.

Abhishek Banerjee was born on 5 May 1985 in Kharagpur, West Bengal.

The teacher’s taunting felt like a Gurumantra.

After coming to Delhi from Kalpakkam, he performed a play on the annual day of 11th class. I was a science student, but my interest was in arts. I was not able to understand science. I used to concentrate less on studies and more on extracurricular activities. During that time, when I got a chance to do anchoring, the math teacher taunted me from behind that Abhishek, now you do this only. His words seemed like Gurumantra to me. I thought he made a very right point.

Took admission in the college where Bachchan Saheb studied.

After this I started taking acting seriously. My dream was to study in Kirori Mal College, because Amitabh Bachchan Sahab studied in that college. I was a big fan of his. Zeeshan Ayub has also studied in that college, he told me about the drama institute of Kirori Mal College. It is very difficult to get admission there. I got admission in the college drama institute after clearing three rounds of auditions. Seeing my body language in college, people used to tease me by calling me the Amitabh of the wall.

‘I boycott exam’ written on paper

The marks were fine in first and second year. By the third year I was getting bored. At the same time, the audition of ‘Chak De India’ was going on in Delhi. After going there, I understood that there is an intern exam for every field. Similarly, for the film industry, intern exam means audition.

At the time of audition no one asks about degree and studies. They just see whether the acting is good or not. I thought this was the internship exam for the field I wanted to go into. At the same time I wrote ‘I boycott exam’ on the paper.

Father slapped me as soon as he saw the degree

I didn’t tell anything to my parents. When the result time came, I showed the fake degree to my father. Slapped after 10 seconds. I was wondering how they found out? Actually, I entered my name in a friend’s last year’s degree with the help of computer, but forgot to change the date. I was beaten badly that day.

Couldn’t do the girl teasing scene

Rakesh had worked in Om Prakash Mehra’s film ‘Rang De Basanti’ during his college days in Delhi. Tushar Pandey’s elder brother Sunil Pandey had told that Rakesh Om Prakash Mehra is going to come. I had to say a few lines as soon as I went in front of him, but I fumbled. He wanted to cast me in the role of a girl molester in the film. When he could not speak the dialogue that teases a girl, he was given the role of a documentary.

Got Rs 1500 for working in first film

Worked one day in ‘Rang De Basanti’. I got Rs 1500 from it. Out of that, I offered Rs 500 to God, gave Rs 500 to my mother and spent the remaining Rs 500 in a party. After this film he became a celebrity in Delhi.

Came to Mumbai after collecting Rs 1.5 lakh

I used to teach theater in Gargi College. There the salary was so much that the expenses could be easily covered. I did voice overs. In that, money was paid on a per minute basis. During the same time, he worked in Doordarshan’s show ‘Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai’. I collected Rs 1.5 lakh and came to Mumbai. When I came to Mumbai, all the money was spent on room deposit and brokerage. Gautam Kishanchandani had auditioned for the film ‘Dev D’ in Delhi. Also did a small role in that film. It was from there that I got the casting offer. Gautam Sir had said that whenever you come to Mumbai, let me know and I will keep a job for you.

Fired from job as assistant casting director

When you ran out of money, you thought how to earn now? A call came from Delhi for a serial of Doordarshan. I was told that I would have to come by train. I had become an artist of Mumbai. I said I would come by flight. The train ticket was sent, so I did not catch the train. Within six months of coming to Mumbai, I got the job of Assistant Casting Director in Cinevista, but due to my carelessness towards work, I was fired from there.

Got my first job at a monthly salary of Rs 20,000.

At the same time, Gautam Kishanchandani was casting the film ‘Once Upon a Time in Mumbai’. He hired me as his assistant. I was reading the lines of Ajay Devgan, Emraan Hashmi and other actors and girls. I was having a lot of fun. He was also getting a salary of Rs 20 thousand per month. The film’s director Milan Luthria had also offered a role in ‘Once Upon a Time in Mumbai’, but I don’t know what happened later. That role again went to Anjum Sharma, who played the role of Sharad in ‘Mirzapur’. I have done the casting of ‘Mirzapur’.

I felt that I would not be able to act, I went into depression.

Had worked with casting director Gautam Kishanchandani for four years. During this time I had understood that I would get roles easily. I was very keen to work in the film ‘Ghanchakkar’, but Namit Das was selected in my place. When I was not selected, I realized that something was wrong somewhere. Maybe I was not able to understand the camera angle. I started feeling that acting would not be possible. At that time I went into depression. Started thinking that something should be done in direction and writing.

Didn’t want to play friend’s role in films

Before Rajkumar Gupta’s film ‘Ghanchakkar’, he had played the role of a pickpocket in his film ‘No One Killed Jessica’. That scene was directed by Amar Kaushik, who was an associate director in the film. Although I was offered the role of a friend in that film, I did not want to play the role of a friend. In our film industry the role of a friend is called shadow role. He has no identity of his own. Instead of playing the big role of a friend, I preferred to play a small role of a pickpocket.

I got scared when I got a big role in ‘Ajji’

I never compromised with work. I had my own choice regarding roles, but when I did not get good roles, I was broken as an artiste. Then I got the role of only one scene in TVF Pitchers. Because of that one scene, people started recognizing me, then the confidence came back. After that worked in Devashish Makhija’s short films ‘Ugli Baar’ and ‘Tandav’.

Because of this short film, Devashish Makhija gave him a chance in the film ‘Ajji’. When I got the opportunity in this film, I was afraid that I would not be able to find out whether I have got a big role in the film for the first time. Dev supported me a little and gave me courage. After the first scene my confidence came back. Played the role of a rapist in this film. Whom people looked at with hatred.

Amar Kaushik said that reminded him of Amrish Puri Sahab

After watching my film ‘Ajji’, Amar Kaushik had said that you reminded me of Amrish Puri Sahab. That was a big compliment in my life. Just a few months later, his film ‘Stree’ was starting. When I called him, he called for Jana’s audition. Although I was not selected for the first time. Someone else was doing that role. Producer Dinesh Vijan felt that there should be another option for Jana’s character. Amar showed my audition to Dinesh Vijan and this is how the film was finalized.

There was a fear of ending the career even after the films joined the Rs 100 crore club.

After ‘Stree’, ‘Dream Girl’ and ‘Bala’, I was being offered comedy roles. These three films had joined the 100 crore club. I didn’t want to play the same kind of roles. That’s why I refused many films. I was feeling that my career would end like this. I will not get any other character, but when the web series ‘Paatal Lok’ was released during Covid, people’s perception changed after seeing the character of Hathoda Tyagi. However, Imran wanted to play the role of Ansari in this series, which was played by Ishwak Singh.

Started experimenting with different characters

After ‘Paatal Lok’, psycho characters started appearing. Again the thought started coming in my mind that what should I do now? During the same time, my film ‘Rashmi Rocket’ came, in which Lauer had a very different character. It was a different experience for me. After that he started experimenting with different characters.

Abhishek Banerjee’s dream of working with Amitabh Bachchan was fulfilled in the film ‘Section 84’.

Bachchan Saheb is the Dronacharya of my life

Be it web series or films, I have got opportunities to play different characters. It was my dream to work with Amitabh Bachchan Sahab. That was completed in the film ‘Section 84’. I consider him my guru. I had taken admission in Kirori Mal College, Delhi because Bachchan Saheb had studied there. Bachchan Saheb is the Dronacharya of my life. Working with him made me realize how great an artist he is. We both have many great scenes in the film which the audience will enjoy watching.

Got scolded when I touched her feet

When I met Bachchan Saheb and touched his feet, he scolded me and said – don’t do all this. Bachchan Saheb does not like anyone touching his feet. After some time, the film’s director Ribhu Dasgupta introduced us and said that we both had studied from the same college. Bachchan Saheb liked this very much. At that time I felt that I was not talking to such a big star, but to my college senior. He still has the energy of a young person.

Got emotional after listening to the monologue and started crying

There is a 10-minute monologue of Bachchan sahib in one scene of the film. Bachchan Saheb had to speak that monologue after seeing someone else, but seeing my love and respect for him, he decided to speak it after seeing me. Bachchan Saheb had understood that I consider him my guru. Hearing that dialogue, I became so emotional that I started crying.
