We met Loco Pilot Meena Soni at Shyamnagar metro station. He told us the whole story of his journey.

Travel from Jhunjhunu to Jaipur Metro

Meena Soni’s journey has been full of challenges. Despite coming from a family where higher education of girls was not given much importance, they completed their studies with the support of their father.

After doing BSc in Jhunjhunu, he came to Jaipur and completed his MSc (Mathematics) from Rajasthan University. He started preparing for competitive examinations during his studies.

In 2013, when the metro construction work in Jaipur was in full swing, he decided to make a career in the metro. Passed the examination of the station controller-cum-train operator and joined the metro services.

Six months training was received from Delhi Metro. Meena said that at that time the best job education sector for girls was considered. But as soon as I told that there is a job of running the metro, relatives were shocked once.

On June 3, 2015, when he first ran the metro, the family was nervous and enthusiastically. But this moment was proud of him because it was a chance to prove that women are not behind in any field.

It is very difficult for a two -year -old child to leave home

Today, despite being the mother of a two -year -old son, Meena is efficiently handling both the job and family. Meena says that the child is very small, he always has a thought in the mind. When she came to work again after maternity leave, the 6 -month -old child used to worry all the time.

Meena Soni said that she got full support from her husband and family, due to which she is able to perform her duty along with the responsibility of children.

But I know that every passenger sitting in the metro is also my responsibility. Now the child is two years old, as soon as he goes home, he opens the gate and hugs with me.

But with the help of husband and in -laws, things have become very easy. Meena says- Every day there is a new challenge, but with courage and support of family, everything becomes possible.

Second meeting at station: Superintendent from Yogita

We got an eye towards the control room of the metro station. There, another woman was instructing her staff, monitoring the monitor, and handling the station arrangements.

Yogita’s duty is to ensure complete operation of the metro station.

Bikaner’s daughter, metro station superintendent

Yogita, 36, is from Bikaner. The father was in the police, the brother is also working in the police department and the sister is a singer. Yogita says that I was always in my mind and do something different. But didn’t this know?

The family always supported, but society’s thinking was different. ‘People used to say that there is a girl, what is it to do by studying and studying, you have to get married.’ But I had a passion to do something different. It was decided that I would make my own identity.

Yogita said that after being admitted to Jaipur Metro in 2013, first took responsibility for Metro Control. This work was very challenging, but successfully performed it with courage and hard work.

Yogita told that when the responsibility of the station was given to women in the beginning, people used to wonder how the girls would handle everyone.

Now it has been ten years, everything is going well. Initially, there was a lot of scared many times but everyone’s support was found in the office, so it became easy. Today I am the superintendent of 3 metro stations.

Yogita says- A woman should come to balance in family, children and career all three because all three are important for women. I have two children, a three -year -old son and a nine -year -old daughter. Many times it seems that I can give children a little less time, but this is not possible.

The family has full support, which is why I am able to fulfill the responsibility of safety of thousands of passengers along with raising my two children. When the metro control came in hand for the first time, there was a fear of how to handle. But when I have come here, I will go further.

First ‘Mahila Shakti’ metro station

Shyam Nagar Metro Station of Jaipur is the first ‘Mahila Shakti’ metro station, where the entire staff is of women. Whether it is to issue tickets on the ticket window, to fulfill the responsibility of the controller, to operate a train or watch cleaning and safety, women handle every role here.

More than 30 women are working in different shifts at this station. On 14 September 2015, it was declared the country’s first ‘Mahila Metro Station’.

Shyam Nagar Metro Station of Jaipur is the first women’s power railway station in the country.
