New Delhi. Aamir Khan’s film ‘Mela’ was released in the year 2000. In this, Twinkle Khanna was seen pairing with the actor. Recently the release of ‘Mela’ completed 25 years. Do you know that Twinkle Khanna was not the first choice for this film. ‘Mela’ director Dharmesh Darshan revealed that he wanted to cast Aishwarya Rai opposite Aamir Khan in the film, but things did not work out.
During an interview with Bollywood Hungama, Dharmesh Darshan was asked whether Aishwarya Rai was the first choice for ‘Mela’, to which he replied yes. He said, ‘She (Aishwarya Rai) was also my first choice for the role of Memsaab in Raja Hindustani (1996). But she had to immediately go for the Miss World Competition. I did not want to take any risk, because I wanted an actress who could give full time to films and Bollywood. It was his greatness that he never took it to heart.

Dharmesh Darshan also talked about Aishwarya Rai’s cameo role in the film ‘Mela’. He said, ‘Heroines of his level have worked with Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan. Still, she agreed and after traveling a distance of a few hours, she reached there to shoot that scene. Some people asked me, ‘Sir, you gave a cameo to Aishwarya and gave such a big role to Twinkle Khanna.’

Aamir Khan and Twinkle Khanna’s ‘Mela’ was released on 7 January 2000, but flopped badly at the box office. The year after ‘Mela’, Twinkle Khanna said goodbye to the world of acting, one reason for which was the negative response to the film. Twinkle had once told in the show ‘Koffee with Karan’ that she had told Akshay Kumar that she would marry him only if this film flopped. After staying away from acting, Twinkle Khanna became a full time writer and has also achieved success in this field.
