Made debut with ‘Kabul Express’
Kabir Khan made his mainstream directorial debut in 2006 with the thriller ‘Kabul Express’ under the banner of Yash Raj Films. According to him, the film was largely based on his and his friend Rajan Kapoor’s experiences in Afghanistan. The film told the story of two Indian journalists, an American journalist and an Afghan guide, who are taken hostage by Pakistani soldiers. They are forced to travel for 48 hours across the war-torn country.
There were many controversies regarding this film. In 2007, the government of Afghanistan (which had previously supported the shooting of the film) banned the film, preventing its official release there.
According to reports, the film was banned because it allegedly portrayed the Hazara Shia minority community, one of Afghanistan’s four largest ethnic groups, in a negative light.
After ‘Kabul Express’, Kabir made ‘New York’, action thriller ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ with Salman Khan, ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’, ‘Phantom’ and ’83’. Recently Kabir’s “Chandu Champion” with Kartik Aryan was released. Karthik played the role of India’s first Paralympic gold medalist Murlikant Petkar.
