New DelhiVeteran actor Vinod Khanna created a stir with his entry in Bollywood. He was considered the only star who could give tough competition to Amitabh Bachchan. However, Vinod Khanna had decided to leave Bollywood at the peak of his career and go to Osho Ashram in America. After staying away from the big screen for 5 years, he made a comeback with the film ‘Insaaf’ released in 1987. Filmmaker-actor Ananth Mahadevan told that at that time there was a queue of people more than 1 kilometer long outside the ticket window.
Ananth Mahadevan praised Vinod Khanna in an interview given to Siddharth Kannan. He said, ‘I wanted to work with a great personality like Vinod Khanna. When you want something with all your heart, it becomes true. When I made the film Red Alert based on Naxalites, it had a great cast which included Ashish Vidyarthi, Sameera Reddy and Sunil Shetty. Vinod Khanna played a very important role in the film and I got a chance to see him, stand with him and perform with him.
Vinod Khanna’s film was released in the year 1987.
The line of people was more than 1 km long
Anant Mahadevan told how the atmosphere was regarding Vinod Khanna’s comeback film ‘Insaaf’ after returning from Osho Ashram. He said, ‘I remember when Insaaf was released. This was his first film after his return from Osho Ashram. His charm was such that people were standing in line to buy advance tickets from Apsara Theater to Maratha Temple and this distance was more than a kilometer. However, due to the craze about justice, the film did not perform well at the box office.
Vinod Khanna’s fees were fixed
He further told that Vinod Khanna’s fees were fixed. Anant told that, ‘He was a very cheerful and good person. Whenever I went to him with a role, he used to say that Anant, you know me, my fixed fee is 35 lakhs. I take Rs 35 lakh. Now you can shoot me for one day or 20 days. My fees remain the same. He had only one fee. It is known that Anant Mahadevan and Vinod Khanna had worked in films like ‘Red Alert’ and ‘Chandni’.
