New Delhi. Veteran writer and lyricist Javed Akhtar talked about his relationship with wife Shabana Azmi. He told that he and Shabana are more good friends than a married couple. Javed Akhtar said that he does not give much importance to an institution like marriage. He believes that the foundation of any relationship is mutual respect. He called marriage an old and useless tradition, which has been accumulating filth for centuries.

Javed Akhtar talked about his relationship with wife Shabana Azmi on Barkha Dutt’s ‘Mojo Story’ show. He said, ‘Actually, we are hardly a married couple, but we are very good friends. To me the only qualification for a good marriage is, are you friends or not? Marriage is a useless job. This is a centuries old tradition. This is a stone, which has been rolling down the mountains for centuries. As it comes down the mountain, it collects a lot of moss, garbage and dirt.

Javed Akhtar shared his views on marriage and said that it is not about labels like husband and wife. Instead, it’s about good friends who respect and understand each other. He said, ‘Words like wife and husband have come to have many different meanings. forget this. How can two people, irrespective of gender, live together happily? This requires mutual respect, mutual consideration and giving space to each other.

He further said, ‘We have to understand that the other person is also a human being, who has his own ambitions and dreams. He has as much right to his ambitions as I have to mine. That is all. This is not rocket science. It’s actually quite simple. You both can be happy only when both of you are happy.

love has no value without respect
Javed Akhtar said, ‘Love has no value without respect. An independent woman cannot be made a slave. An independent woman brings her own thoughts, ideas, desires and dreams. That’s why she will never want to be your slave. A partner has to understand all this, only then the relationship and marriage will be able to function properly.
