Javed Akhtar recently talked about Ashutosh Gowarikar’s film ‘Swades’ in a conversation with YouTube channel O2India. He narrated the story of writing the song ‘Pal Pal Hai Bhari’ from the film and told how much pressure he was under while writing this song.
When the filmmaker called Javed Akhtar in a hurry
Javed Sahab said that when he was told that he had a time limit to write this song, he really thought that he would not be able to do it, but he managed to complete the work in just two hours. Recalling that moment, he said, ‘Ashutosh called him at Y, where he was shooting and told him that since AR Rahman was going for a month, he had to record the song in the next 1-2 days. Will have to do.

After this, Javed asked him about the story of the film and he was surprised by the filmmaker’s answer. This scene was inspired from Ramayana, where Sita was taken hostage by Ravana in Ashoka Vatika and Ravana asks Sita why she keeps chanting the name of Ram. ‘You have made complete arrangements for my murder’
After listening to Ashutosh Gowarikar, I told him, ‘You have made complete arrangements for my murder. Do you realize how sensitive a topic this is? That Ravana is asking Ram a question and Sita is answering, you are asking me to write this song? If you had told me in Mumbai, I would have at least brought some books like Ramcharitmanas and see what I can quote from them. Javed Saheb further said that this was the time when the Ram Mandir movement was at its peak. I told him I couldn’t do it.
Wrote the entire song in 2 hours
In the conversation, he further said that I usually sleep late, but I was so stressed about this song that I fell asleep at 9.30 that night and then woke up in the morning. Javed Akhtar said, I thought I will give it a try and if it doesn’t work, I will tell you, I tried but could not do it. After 2 hours I realized that I had written the song completely. Then when I showed it to Ashutosh Gowarikar, he also liked it.

Javed Sahab further said that after the release of the song, I met a person who was very educated and he knew a lot about Ramayana and Ramcharitmanas. He said that you have done a divine work. The way you have used Tulsidas’s logic method was very good.
