inherited music
The story of Jagjit Singh becoming a singer and music composer is a bit filmy. Jagjit Singh, born on 8 February 1941 in Sriganganagar, inherited music and understood both sur and taal. He met a top class guru like Pandit Chhagan Lal Sharma, on whose kindness Jagjit Singh learned classical music for two years. But, this was just the beginning of the life of a great singer. As time passed, he learned Khayal, Thumri and Dhrupad from Ustad Jamal Khan Sahab. The father wanted the son to go into administrative service. Jagjit Singh loved tunes and decided to move forward with Sur-Taal. His interest in music increased while studying at Kurukshetra University.
Mumbai took the singer’s exam
At this time the Vice Chancellor encouraged Jagjit Singh. It was only on his advice that Jagjit Singh moved to Mumbai. You would think that after learning so much, Jagjit Singh would have got a comfortable break. No, life tested Jagjit Singh as much as Mumbai did. Jagjit Singh had come to Mumbai. Initially, when I did not get a big break, I started singing jingles for advertisements while working as a paying guest. He would perform at weddings or other functions as soon as he got a chance. This effort was to earn a living and survive in a city like Mumbai.
How did Nain meet Chitra?
When Jagjit Singh was struggling, he used to often visit a Gujarati family in whose neighborhood Chitra lived. According to media reports, Chitra was married at that time. She was married to Debo Prasad Dutt, with whom she had a daughter named Monica. Chitra’s husband Debo Prasad also had a keen interest in music, so he had a studio built at home. One day Chitra saw Jagjit Singh going to meet a Gujarati family. Apart from Chitra, many people praised Jagjit Singh’s singing, although Chitra did not like his voice. Jagjit gradually started moving towards the peak of popularity with his singing, while on the other hand, Chitra also started being counted among the famous singers. One day Jagjit Singh reached Debo Prasad’s house to record a jingle, but Chitra flatly refused to work with him, which hurt Jagjit Singh’s self-respect. He told Chitra that he too did not need her. Chitra liked the self-respecting nature of Jagjit Singh. A friendship blossomed between the two, which turned into love with the passage of time. Chitra’s husband left her one day and took another girl as his life partner in 1968.
