Prayagraj police in Uttar Pradesh have arrested two criminals of a gang making fake marriage certificates. This gang was making fake marriage certificates of religious institutions. The gang used to charge Rs 5 to 10 thousand for a certificate.
There is a legal age limit for marriage in India. At the time of marriage, the girl’s age should not be less than 18 years and the boy’s age should not be less than 21 years. If either of the two is under age on the date of marriage, then in such a situation a marriage certificate cannot be made.
This gang was making fake certificates for anyone. Whether the boy or girl was married or not, whether they had run away from home or were under age, he was taking money from all such people and providing them fake marriage certificates. Later the same marriage certificate was used to seek protection from the court.

answer- Just as birth certificate is a document of legal authenticity of the date of birth, similarly marriage certificate is a valid legal document, which certifies the marital relationship of husband and wife.
In 2006, the Supreme Court had made marriage certificate mandatory to make a marriage valid. The main reason behind this decision was to protect women’s rights.

answer- Marriage certificate is necessary to prove the authenticity of husband and wife being married and to avail the benefits of many government and non-government schemes. Many private companies provide some separate benefits to married employees. To avail the benefits of these schemes, marriage certificate is required. Question- What documents are required to get a marriage certificate?
answer- If an applicant wants to get a marriage certificate made, he should be an Indian citizen by origin. Also, the age of husband and wife should be as per Indian law. It is mandatory to apply for marriage certificate within one month of marriage.
However, even after that, one can apply for marriage certificate at any time for 5 years. But for this, along with late fees, special permission has to be taken from the marriage registrar.
Whereas if the applicant was married earlier and has now been divorced, then he will have to first apply for a divorce certificate for the new marriage. Apart from this, some documents are also required. Understand this from the graphic below.
Question- What is the process of making marriage certificate?
answer- You can apply for marriage certificate both online and offline. To apply offline, the couple will have to visit the office of the sub-registrar within the jurisdiction where the marriage was solemnized. There they will have to fill out a written application, which will include signatures from both parties. Necessary documents have to be submitted along with the form. After this, if no one objects to the marriage for 30 days or there is no dispute, then after 30 days the marriage application is processed and registered.
If someone wants to apply for marriage certificate online then he/she has to visit the official portal of marriage registration of the state.
After this you will have to fill the online marriage registration form. The applicant will then be called to the Registrar’s office to verify the paper work and witnesses. After this the Registrar will complete the registration process.
