WhatsApp for Android may get a new feature that will make video calls and capturing photos inside the app more fun. According to a feature tracker, the instant messaging platform is testing camera effects. The new feature is said to add filters, backgrounds and other effects to users’ faces while capturing a photo or during a video call. While some effects can reportedly be enabled manually, others will be automatically triggered based on expressions and gestures.

It is said that this feature will appear in the beta version but is currently available only to some beta testers.

Based on the screenshots shared by the feature tracker, the new feature can be turned on or off from the app’s privacy settings. A new option named Allow camera effects can be seen inside Settings which can be turned on or off. The feature description explains that to provide a more expressive experience, some effects will mimic your face and hands.

The description also says that this feature is available when the camera is used for clicking photos or during video calls. The feature tracker shows that some of these effects may be applied automatically based on users’ facial expressions, hand gestures, movements, and more. That said, others can be applied manually using the options visible on the display.

This feature can be controlled from privacy settings. Additionally, it can also be enabled or disabled directly from the camera screen and video call interface. The feature tracker also revealed that Camera Effects does not compromise any encryption protocols and even when turned on, video calls remain end-to-end encrypted.
