New Delhi: Indian cinema’s great actor Dilip Kumar was very popular among women, although he remained a bachelor for 44 years. He married then 22 year old Saira Banu. There was unbreakable love between the two, however, after 16 years of marriage, that moment came in their life, which remained like a stain in their idol love story. Saira Banu’s heart was deeply hurt when Dilip Kumar secretly married a woman named Asma Rehman.

Dilip Kumar always regretted his decision and could never forgive himself for the pain he caused to his wife Saira Banu. Sadly, Saira Banu came to know about Dilip Kumar’s second marriage through newspapers. Saira Banu did not believe the news at first, but soon the truth came to light and her heart ached at the deception.

Dilip Kumar had spoken openly about this phase of his life in his book ‘The Substance and the Shadow: An Autobiography’ and revealed that he first met Asma Rehman during a cricket match in Hyderabad. Asma initially met Dilip as a fan, but soon she came to know that he had an ulterior motive behind this meeting. Dilip Kumar was introduced to Asma Rehman through her sisters. She was told that she was a married woman with three children.

When Asma Rehman implicated Dilip Kumar
Dilip Kumar soon started noticing that Asma and her husband were seen everywhere. The actor had told, ‘I was completely unaware of their collusion, which was carried out very cleverly and such circumstances were being cleverly created to get a commitment from me.’ In the year 1982, Dilip Kumar married Asma Rehman and this news shook Saira Banu’s world. Dilip Kumar wrote, ‘I can never forget or forgive the hurt I caused to Saira and the unwavering faith she had in me.’

Dilip finally confessed his big mistake to Saira Banu and asked her for time to legally divorce Asma Rehman. The actor had written in the book, ‘When I admitted my mistake, Saira stood with me. I asked for some time from him to rectify the mistake as per the law and restore the sanctity of the 16 year old marriage. I requested Saira to give me some time to sort all this out. He also signed a ‘commitment letter’ given by Saira Banu and reiterated the promise made to his parents that he would never think of second marriage.
