This response is activated by MAIT cells, which also include white blood cells. They destroy the virus before it can even settle in the nose. These people had higher expression of a gene called HLA-DQA2. This research shows how our immune system protects us from infections that cannot be possible through any other external means.

This research will have a major impact on the next generation of methods to prevent SARS-CoV-2.
