Every year 2 crore deaths occur due to heart disease across the world.
According to the World Heart Federation, more than 2 crore people die every year due to heart related problems all over the world. This means that every 1.5 seconds a person is dying due to heart related diseases.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), heart-related problems are the leading cause of death worldwide. In the year 2019, about 1.79 crore people died due to this. 85% of these deaths were due to heart attack and stroke.
According to a study published in the Journal of American Heart Association, in the year 2016, the number of people suffering from heart disease in India was 5.4 crore. This figure is increasing year after year.
Most heart attacks occur in the month of December
An important study was published in the British Medical Journal in the year 2018. In this study, heart attack cases that occurred in Sweden in the 16 years between 1998 and 2013 were studied. In this, researchers found that every year during the winter season, the cases of heart attacks had increased by 15%. On December 24 alone, the day before Christmas, there was a 37% increase in heart attacks.
A study was published in the year 2004 in the American Heart Association’s journal ‘Circulation’. This study says that there are not as many deaths due to heart attacks in America throughout the year as there are on December 25 alone. After this, the highest number of deaths due to heart attack are recorded on 26 December and then on 1 January.
Why do heart related problems increase in cold?
In winter, the heart has to work twice as hard to pump oxygen throughout the body. Arteries contract due to cold. Due to this, blood flow slows down and the heart muscles get less oxygen. In such a situation, the possibility of stroke or heart attack is higher.
Apart from this, as the temperature falls, blood pressure and cholesterol levels in the body start increasing. This increases the risk of heart attack. Who is most at risk of heart attack in winter, see the graphic below-
These heart related problems can occur in winter
Many types of heart related problems can occur in cold. These include heart attack, heart failure, stroke, high blood pressure and cardiac arrest. Under which conditions there can be a risk of heart attack in cold, understand from the pointers below-
- Running or walking fast in cold weather can cause fatigue. This increases the heart’s need for oxygen. In such a situation, the risk of heart attack increases due to not getting enough oxygen. People suffering from heart disease should avoid outdoor activities in winter.
- The chances of seasonal flu increase in winter. If someone’s heart is already weak then even a simple flu or seasonal fever can increase the workload on his heart. The body will demand more oxygen and the heart will have to work harder.
- It is important to wear woolen clothes to keep the body warm in winter. But while working out, do not wear too thick warm clothes. During this, heat comes out from the body.
Apart from this, two more serious heart diseases can occur in winter. See it below-
hypothermia
This is a medical condition in which the body loses heat faster than it produces it. Due to hypothermia, the body temperature drops below normal i.e. 98.6 Fahrenheit (37°C).
Symptoms of hypothermia include shivering, exhaustion, sleeping too much, and slurred speech. If not treated immediately, hypothermia can be fatal. People already suffering from heart disease may be at higher risk. If someone has hypothermia, take him to a warm place and protect him from the wind. Be sure to seek medical advice.
angina pectoris
Angina is a coronary artery disease. Anyone can become a victim of this due to slow blood flow in winter. Its symptoms include chest pain, restlessness, stiffness, sweating and shortness of breath. These symptoms may vary from person to person and may last from a few seconds to a few minutes.
Angina symptoms may begin when your heart has to work harder and doesn’t get enough oxygen. This can happen when someone works too hard physically, is emotionally disturbed or takes a heavy diet. Sometimes this situation can be dangerous. Therefore, in such a condition, definitely take doctor’s advice.
