The actor who left his indelible mark on Hindi cinema was a fun-loving person. Shammi Kapoor’s full name, born on October 21, 1931, was Shamsher Raj Kapoor.
Shammi Kapoor is considered one of the greatest and successful actors in the history of Indian cinema. He also worked in more than 100 films. In that decade also he had 3 Filmfare Awards and Best Actor Award. Shammi Kapoor was born in Mumbai to Prithviraj Kapoor and Ramsharni Mehra Kapoor.
Spent major part of life in Kolkata
He spent a large part of his childhood in Kolkata. He did his Montessori education and kindergarten in Kolkata itself. After coming back to Mumbai, he took admission first in St. Joseph’s Convent (Wadala) and then in Don Bosco School. He completed his matriculation from New Era School located on Hughes Road. After studying at Ramnarayan Ruia College, he joined his father’s drama company Prithvi Theaters and worked for several years.

Started career in 1953
Shammi Kapoor made his debut in Hindi films with ‘Jeevan Jyoti’ in 1953. The film was directed by Mahesh Kaul, starring Chand Usmani. The path from failure to success in Shammi Kapoor’s life was also very long. He worked in films like ‘Rail Ka Dibba’, ‘Naqab’, ‘Hum Sab Chor Hain’, ‘Mehbooba Shaman Parwana’, ‘Mem Sahib’, ‘Chor Bazaar’. Shammi Kapoor got big success with ‘Tum Sa Nahi Dekha’, ‘Dil Dekar Dekho’ directed by Nasir Hussain.
The film ‘Junglee’ had made him a star
Along with this, after ‘Junglee’ released in 1961, he became famous in the industry as ‘Yahoo’ boy. Shammi Kapoor, who looked serious on screen, was actually a fun-loving person and often impressed the audience with his out-of-the-box acting. Shammi Kapoor married actress Geeta Bali in 1955, but his wife died at the age of just 35. Four years later, Kapoor married Princess Neela Devi Gohil of the Gohil dynasty of Bhavnagar state.
Shammi Kapoor died in the year 2011
In an interview given in 2011, Mumtaz had revealed that Shammi Kapoor had proposed marriage to her after coming close during the shooting of the film ‘Brahmachari’. Mumtaz told that she had rejected the marriage proposal because Kapoor wanted her to leave her career. Shammi Kapoor was suffering from chronic kidney failure. He died on 14 August 2011.
